Czech Bábovka – Marble Bundt Cake

Marble Bábovka Our Frugal Family

Bábovka, which translates [roughly] to grandmother in Czech (babička), is just a bundt cake.  I love making bundt cakes.  They’re self-decorating since they’re baked in beautifully shaped pans.  Simply pour a glaze or icing over them, or just sprinkle with powdered sugar and you’re done.  I use my mother’s old bundt pan and have added others to my collection, including:

Below is a recipe for a simple marble bundt cake using a boxed yellow cake mix.

1 box yellow cake mix (I prefer Duncan Hines)
3 eggs
1/3 cup oil
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 cup chocolate prepared frosting

  1. Heat oven to 325oF.  Grease and flour a bundt pan of your choice.  I prefer Baker’s Joy baking spray (already includes flour).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cake mix, eggs, water, oil, and vanilla.
  3. Mix for 30 seconds until all ingredients are combined.  Mix on medium speed for 2 minutes.  Remove 1 1/4 cup of the batter and set aside.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the reserved 1 1/4 cup batter, powdered sugar, and cocoa.  Mix well.
  5. Pour the yellow batter into your bundt pan.  Drop generous dollops of the chocolate batter on top of the yellow using a large tablespoon.  Cut through the batter with a knife to give your bundt cake a marbled effect.

  6. Bake for approximately 40-45 minutes in a 325oF oven until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.  The cake will pull away from the sides of the pan when done.
  7. Allow the cake to cool for approximately 15-20 minutes on a wire rack [in the pan].  Then transfer it onto a serving plate.

  8. Prepare the cake glaze by microwaving 1 cup of prepared chocolate frosting for 30 seconds.  Stir well.  Drizzle the glaze onto the cake using a spoon.  Alternately, just sprinkle the top of the cake with powdered sugar.

  9. Enjoy!
